It is hard to comprehend the doors of the Union Gospel Mission of Grays Harbor have been open for 75 years! A banquet was held on Saturday, May 14, 2013, to acknowledge this milestone.

The evening was opened in greeting and prayer by Board President Peter J. Schave. A wonderful prime rib dinner was then served by volunteers from the Aberdeen Church of Christ Youth Group.

Ron Roffler, Board member for 35+ years, reviewed the history of UGM, as well as the many changes the ministry has seen over time. The ministry began with a $5.00 donation and a cup of coffee to mostly homeless men, and then transitioned to younger men, women and children.

75thRon75thEllisAn award for service was then given by the Board of Directors to Gary and Paula Rowell, who have served as Executive Director and Director of Women’s Ministries for 25 years. As a surprise, many of the Rowell’s family were present, including a son from Kansas.

The “Diamonds in the Rough” theme for the evening was certainly shown through testimonies from Ellis and Laurel, former clients of the Mission and Friendship House. A video that had been developed for the 75th year was also viewed, with comments from community leaders as well as clients and former clients.

The evening was closed by Gary Rowell, with a special song by Mark Bailey.

75thBonnieWe are grateful for the 75 years that the Lord has seen fit to keep these doors open, with thousands of people being fed, sheltered and clothed over these many years. Many lives have been impacted and changed through the ministry offered. A special “thank you” goes to you, our donors, who have worked right alongside to help keep meeting the needs and changing lives!

Thank you.
